The route continues beyond Mayrhofen

The first part of the journey is shared with many Zillertal destinations. From Innsbruck Airport, the route follows the A12 east through the Inn Valley. At the Zillertal exit, it joins the B169, passes through the Brettfall Tunnel and continues past Fügen, Kaltenbach and Zell am Ziller.

Reaching Mayrhofen does not mean the journey is nearly finished. Hintertux lies roughly another 20 kilometres into the Tux Valley. The route continues on the Tuxer Landesstraße, or L6, through Finkenberg, Vorderlanersbach, Lanersbach, Juns and Madseit before reaching the final village.

The normal route does not cross a high Alpine pass. Its final section is nevertheless a mountain road that climbs towards Hintertux at around 1,500 metres, with bends and avalanche galleries along the way. The normal duration is an estimate rather than a guaranteed arrival time. Traffic through the Zillertal, snow, road maintenance and the exact destination address can all extend the journey.

Hintertux, Madseit and Lanersbach are different destinations

Tux-Finkenberg is the name of the wider holiday region. Within the municipality of Tux, Vorderlanersbach, Lanersbach, Juns, Madseit and Hintertux are separate places along the same valley road. Hintertux is the last of them.

Choose Hintertux only when your accommodation address is actually in Hintertux. An apartment in Lanersbach or Madseit is reached earlier and should be booked using its real location. The correct destination affects the route, journey time, price and return pickup.

The village and the Hintertux Glacier valley station should not be treated as an automatic single drop-off point. Guests staying overnight should enter the full accommodation address. Day visitors heading directly to the glacier should use the valley-station address.

Winter Saturdays and traffic through the Zillertal

Most of the route is shared with traffic heading to resorts in the lower and central Zillertal. Delays can develop on the A12, at the Zillertal exit, around the Brettfall Tunnel and along the B169 through Fügen, Kaltenbach and Zell am Ziller.

Winter Saturdays and school-holiday changeovers are commonly the busiest periods. Congestion early in the valley can affect the complete journey to Hintertux, even when traffic on the final section is moving normally. Snowfall, reduced visibility and winter road maintenance may also require slower driving on the L6.

Allow additional time when a return transfer coincides with a busy changeover day. The normal journey time should not be used as the only basis for planning an airport departure.

Public transport reaches Hintertux—but not in one journey

There is no railway station in Hintertux. A typical public transport journey from Innsbruck Airport involves:

  1. A bus from the airport to Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof
  2. A train from Innsbruck to Jenbach
  3. The narrow-gauge Zillertalbahn from Jenbach to Mayrhofen
  4. Bus 4104 from Mayrhofen through Finkenberg and Tux to Hintertux

Public transport can be the lower-cost choice for a solo traveller with light luggage and a well-timed arrival. It requires several timetables to align, however, and luggage must be handled during each change. The final bus stop may also not be directly beside the accommodation.

A private transfer costs more than public transport but completes the journey in one vehicle, with skis, suitcases and other declared equipment loaded only once.

Pickup at Innsbruck Airport

After collecting your luggage, meet your driver in the public arrivals hall. The driver will hold a sign displaying the name supplied with the booking.

AlpExpress monitors the flight number you provide and adjusts the airport pickup when the aircraft arrives late. Supply the correct flight number, a reachable mobile number, the passenger count and the complete Hintertux destination address. Contact AlpExpress if the flight is cancelled, diverted or assigned a different number.

Skis, luggage, children and summer equipment

Declared skis and snowboards are transported without a separate equipment charge. Include every suitcase, ski bag, boot bag, pushchair and oversized item when booking so that the vehicle can be selected using the complete load.

Baby seats, child seats and booster seats are available free of charge when requested in advance. Provide the age of each child rather than requesting only a generic child seat.

Hintertux receives visitors throughout the year because the glacier also operates outside the main winter season. Bicycles and other large summer equipment must be declared in advance in the same way as ski equipment.

Returning from Hintertux to Innsbruck Airport

The return journey follows the same road through the Tux Valley, Mayrhofen and the Zillertal before joining the A12 towards Innsbruck.

Do not calculate the pickup time by subtracting only the normal drive from the airline's check-in deadline. The plan should also account for the exact accommodation address, traffic on the L6 and B169, the Brettfall Tunnel, motorway conditions, airport security and the airline's requirements. Additional time may be appropriate on winter Saturdays, during school holidays and after heavy snowfall.
